Alas, I present to you.....The Popcorn Experiment. I like to dub it the, "How Many Popcorn Kernels Will I Find in the Days After the Experiment is Completed and I'm Getting Seriously Pissed" Experiment.
The purpose of this experiment was to see how many popcorn kernels would pop in two scenarios. Popcorn kernels have a small amount of water in them which, when heated to the right temperature, "pop," giving us that fluffy stuff we slather butter on and eat voraciously. For part one, the kids had to count out 100 kernels and place them in an air popper. After five seconds went by in the air popper with no kernels popping, we knew we were done.
While Izzy and Sam conducted the experiment, Scotty just talked to us from across the way...
The next part required the kids to count how many kernels had actually popped according to "standard" conditions. We had surprising results....
What did we learn? Well, despite being in the same conditions, not all kernels will pop because of the water content. After this discovery, we moved on to phase two.
The second part of the experiment required us to also count out 100 seeds and soak those in water for 24 hours. Once the 24 hours were up, we placed them in the air popper and counted how many popped.
Below was the result....Essentially, they popped but not in the manner you would expect. None of these were edible and we discovered that too much water could be as ineffective as too little water.
All in all, the kids enjoyed the experiment, especially eating their results.
I, however, am still finding kernels in all kinds of places but at least Izzy is willing to help:
Next up: cola and pennies....and my attempt to steer my children away from soda!
Stay tuned!
